Modern refrigeration technologies represent a key factor for efficiency and safety in the meat industry. Traditional cooling systems are gradually being replaced by advanced solutions, such as transcritical CO₂ refrigeration or next-generation ammonia systems, which provide superior performance and a reduced environmental impact.
According to data from the European Environment Agency, the use of these technologies can reduce energy consumption by up to 18% and greenhouse gas emissions by 25%. In Romania, adoption is still limited, but projects financed through the CAP 2023–2027 and the NRRP support the modernization of processing facilities. Cost–benefit analysis shows that, although initial investments are high, the payback period is between 5 and 7 years, thanks to reductions in energy and maintenance costs.
In addition, modern systems ensure better temperature uniformity and increased safety in product handling. For meat processors, the transition to modern refrigeration technologies is not only a compliance requirement with European regulations but also an opportunity to increase competitiveness.
