Romania’s pork sector remains one of the most sensitive segments of the food industry, both in terms of domestic production and the commercial relationship with major retail chains. In this context, the Competition Council is analyzing how the market operates and how relations between suppliers and retailers are structured, in order to identify potential dysfunctions within the supply chain.
The President of the Romanian Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, stated that the pork trade sector is one in which a stronger consolidation of suppliers would be necessary, allowing them to negotiate more effectively with commercial partners. According to him, the fragmentation of the sector means that many producers or processors have a limited bargaining capacity in their relationship with large retail networks, which operate with significant volumes and complex logistical requirements.
The analysis conducted by the competition authority covers the entire economic chain of pork, from farm production and slaughtering to processing and distribution to retail. The objective is to evaluate how commercial relationships are structured and to identify the factors that influence suppliers’ access to the market.
In the authority’s view, one possible direction for development could be increasing the level of association among producers or consolidating companies within the sector, in order to create economic entities with greater bargaining capacity and sufficient volumes to meet the requirements of the modern market. Cooperatives, partnerships or other forms of economic organization could contribute to aggregating production and stabilizing commercial relationships.
The results of the Competition Council’s analysis could provide a clearer picture of the structure of Romania’s pork market and of the ways in which relations between producers, processors and retailers can be improved. In the context of pressures generated by imports and the increasingly demanding logistical requirements of retail, the consolidation of the sector is considered by the authority to be one of the directions that could contribute to increasing the competitiveness of local suppliers.
