At the headquarters of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), a working meeting was held focusing on the main challenges facing Romania’s pig farming sector and pork processing industry. The discussions brought together representatives of pig breeders, meat processors, ANSVSA leadership, and the interim Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Tánczos Barna.

The topics addressed included the impact of African swine fever on domestic production, the strengthening of biosecurity measures, and the administrative and economic difficulties faced by operators in the sector. According to data from the European Commission and ANSVSA, African swine fever continues to represent one of the most significant challenges for Romanian livestock farming, affecting both production capacity and the competitiveness of the processing industry.

During the meeting, discussions also covered issues related to regionalization, traceability, and product labeling, as well as the need for standardized procedures applied nationwide. Industry representatives emphasized the importance of simplifying administrative processes and clarifying procedures regarding storage, separation of technological flows, and the use of raw materials originating from Romania.

Possible support measures for the sector were also analyzed, including faster compensation mechanisms in the context of disease outbreaks and solutions aimed at reducing costs related to testing and sanitary-veterinary compliance. Participants highlighted the need to maintain food safety standards while increasing predictability for economic operators.

ANSVSA stated that technical and institutional dialogue with industry representatives will continue, with the objective of identifying practical solutions to protect animal health, food safety, and support Romanian agri-food production.

On the same day, the interim Minister of Agriculture and the President of ANSVSA also scheduled similar meetings with representatives of milk processors and sheep breeders, as part of a broader series of consultations dedicated to Romania’s main livestock sectors.
