The new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023–2027 places emphasis on sustainable farming practices, and Romanian farmers can benefit from additional payments through eco-schemes aimed at improving the environment and animal welfare.
In livestock farming, eligible measures include: extensive grazing, maintaining an optimal stocking density, using low-methane feed, protecting wetlands, and implementing manure management systems.
The value of support ranges between €100 and €400 per livestock unit (LU), depending on the type of farm and the complexity of the measure applied, according to APIA. In 2024, over 25,000 farmers applied for these schemes, with demand increasing compared to the previous year.
For 2025, an expansion of eco-schemes is expected, along with the introduction of additional bonuses for farms that combine environmental measures with investments in energy efficiency. The goal is clear: to reduce the carbon footprint of farms and increase the competitiveness of Romanian agri-food products on the European market.
