Starting in 2024, the European Union has recommended the extended implementation of front-of-pack nutritional labeling, through systems such as Nutri-Score or Nutrinform Battery. These systems aim to quickly guide consumers toward healthier products.

A Eurobarometer survey shows that 82% of Europeans read nutritional labels, but only 37% fully understand the symbols used. Nutri-Score classifies products from A (green, healthy) to E (red, less healthy), while Nutrinform provides a percentage-based system reflecting the recommended daily intake per portion.

Challenges for the industry:

  • difficulties in standardizing scores for mixed products;
  • negative perception of certain traditional products (e.g., aged cheeses);
  • adaptation of packaging materials and communication;
  • risk of oversimplifying complex nutritional attributes.

On the other hand, a study conducted by Wageningen University (Netherlands) indicates that front-of-pack labels reduce decision-making time by 23% and can positively influence food choices, especially among young people.

Romania has not yet adopted a unified system, but European pressure suggests that regulation is imminent by 2026.
