Family farms represent the backbone of Romanian agriculture, accounting for over 70% of livestock holdings, according to INS 2024. However, most operate on a small scale, with limited financial and technological resources, which makes them vulnerable to economic changes and market demands.

The modernization of family farms can be achieved through investments in basic equipment (milk cooling tanks, mechanical milking machines, improved shelters) and by accessing non-reimbursable funds. The CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027 provides financing lines of up to €200,000 for such investments.

Forming cooperatives and producer groups is an essential solution for increasing bargaining power and reducing logistical costs. European examples show that small farms can survive and even thrive when they collaborate in joint purchasing, processing, and distribution.

In addition, digitalization and the involvement of young people in management can bring greater efficiency and adaptability. Family farms that succeed in combining tradition with modernization will remain competitive and will continue to play an important role in the rural economy.
