FoodIngredientsFirst reports that FoodChain ID has unveiled a new regulatory library module called “Sustainable Packaging Services,” a digital tool designed to help food manufacturers keep up with evolving global regulations on sustainable packaging.

Response to Industry Pressures

The module covers trends, substances of concern, chemical and mechanical recycling, food contact, and packaging compliance. This initiative responds to pressures from both consumers and regulators for eco-friendly packaging options. The Sustainable Packaging Services integrates new and existing digital services to help manufacturers navigate the constantly changing landscape of sustainable packaging regulations.

Developed under the guidance of FoodChain ID’s customer advisory board, which includes industry giants from the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector, the services are tailored to address the industry's urgent need for sustainable packaging.

Industry Partnerships

"Industry partnerships are key to meeting the urgent need for sustainable packaging," says Jason Grimm, Senior Vice President of Digital Solutions at FoodChain ID. "In this rapidly evolving environment, we must cooperate and learn from each other. Our customer advisory board is engaged with the major challenges of a sustainable packaging supply chain, including packaging design, environment, food safety, and regulatory expectations."

Product Suite

The sustainable packaging services encompass a wide range of offerings, including:

  • Packaging Sustainability Trends: Provides insights into global and regional trends and hotspots with filters for bioplastics, environmental claims, recycling processes, and single-use plastic regulations, helping companies adopt eco-friendly packaging practices.
  • Sustainability Reports and Summaries: Monthly insights from experts on critical topics like substances of concern, chemical and mechanical recycling, circular economy principles, and extended producer responsibility initiatives.
  • Regulatory Library Sustainability Module: Helps companies stay updated on regulatory changes and trends.
  • Packaging Compliance Solutions: Assists in evaluating and managing food contact and packaging compliance, streamlining the compliance process, and ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Packaging Sustainability Expertise: Offers tailored consulting services for food or cosmetic product contact and packaging sustainability, leveraging global experts’ knowledge.

Compliance and Collaboration

FoodChain ID notes that the drive for sustainable packaging initiatives is fueled by consumer demand and regulatory mandates. In the EU, proposed regulations aim to ensure that all packaging on the market is reusable or leads to high-quality, closed-loop recycling by 2030. Similarly, various state-level regulations in the US necessitate real-time regulatory monitoring.

"FoodChain ID is leading industry collaboration to drive responsible innovation and supply chain alignment for sustainable packaging," comments Conor Kearney, CEO of FoodChain ID. "As a result of this collaboration, FoodChain ID’s sustainable packaging services address the need for brands and manufacturers to understand emerging regulations and issues, and to access expertise for packaging compliance."

This initiative aims to help companies align their packaging practices with broader sustainability goals, ensuring compliance with emerging global standards.
