The modular and scalable robotic solution reduces sorting errors, increases throughput by 3 times and improves order efficiency and traceability.

The experimental installation anticipates a wider deployment of this technology on site.

GXO Logistics, Inc. (NYSE: GXO), the world's largest provider of dedicated contract logistics services, today announced the successful deployment of Global Robotics Services (GRS) robots in a 3D sorting system. The installation in Stradella, Italy, the first of its kind in Europe, illustrates the company's position as a technology leader.

"GXO has invested in a pilot program using robotic sorting technology to increase productivity, accuracy and operational efficiency for one of our major customers in the fashion industry," said Alessandro Renzo, General Manager, Italy and Switzerland, GXO.

"We are constantly seeking and testing innovative technologies to meet the rapidly evolving needs of our customers, and we expect that a successful test will lead to wider installation at this location."

The robotic sorting solution from GRS (Global Robotics Services) can be implemented quickly and easily - typically within weeks, as opposed to the months required for alternative sorting technologies.

The robotics-as-a-service, or RaaS, model makes this solution an efficient tool for handling business peaks, such as during the peak holiday season, and dramatically reduces customers' need for capital expenditures and long lead times needed for other solutions. GXO is currently successfully operating this technology in a state-of-the-art facility in the US.

The 30-day pilot program took place at a GXO location in Stradella, Italy, which hosts an e-commerce platform. The installation took just one week, and more than a dozen 3D sorting robots were programmed to feed 30 trolleys with more than 450 destination containers.

The robots achieved a throughput of 1,200 units per hour - more than 3 times that of the previous solution - and could be further scaled to achieve significantly higher throughput. The pilot project also optimized man-hours related to the sorting process, reduced sorting errors and increased order traceability.

GXO designs and operates the world's most advanced storage solutions. The technology is a key competitive advantage for GXO, enabling it to add value to its customers' end-to-end operations in terms of cost, efficiency, accuracy and environmental impact. GXO is the industry leader in automation, generating approximately 30% of its revenue from automated solutions, compared to the industry average of 8%.

In the first quarter of 2023, GXO set a new record for operational technology deployment, increasing total technical and automated solutions by 64% year-over-year.
