The Competition Council states that the shelf price of fresh milk of Romanian origin continues to experience reductions, averaging over 20% in the month of June, as a result of the temporary voluntary agreement between retailers and processors, according to data analyzed by the institution.
The competition authority analyzed prices for 90 products (milk assortments) from 21 processors and marketed by the top 10 largest retail chains in Romania.
Initially, the analysis was based on data valid for May 5, 2023, and the next stage included information available as of June 12, 2023.
Thus, in May, the month when the agreement was implemented, the price of Romanian milk, both 1.5% fat and 3.5% fat, decreased by 19.89%, and in June, the shelf price recorded reductions of 20.54%.
It is worth noting that the voluntary agreement between retailers and processors for reducing the price of fresh milk for consumption came into effect on May 1, 2023, for a period of six months.
Currently, all major retail chains and all processors that meet the conditions participate in the voluntary agreement:
to market fresh Romanian milk that costs over 7 lei/liter (without being included in any promotion) as of April 11, 2023.
The Competition Council has been involved in the implementation actions of this agreement to guide interested companies to participate in order to avoid the risk of violating competition rules.
The Competition Council will continue to monitor this initiative together with responsible institutions such as the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC), using the Food Price Monitor application, and will provide information to the Government, which will decide if measures are necessary.
