PigProgress reports that Vietnam has approved the domestic and commercial use of two in-house-produced vaccines against African swine fever (ASF), as announced by the government. This makes these vaccines the first two commercial vaccines against the virus.
The news agency Reuters reported on the Vietnamese government's approval at the end of July. The approved vaccines include Navet-ASFvac, developed by Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine based on research by the US Department of Agriculture, and AVAC ASF Live, which is developed by AVAC Vietnam JSC.
The approval of these vaccines may also lead to potential sales abroad. The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture has instructed companies to develop production plans for both domestic sales and export, as stated in the government's communication.
Over 650,000 doses of the vaccines have recently been tested on pig herds in 40 provinces in Vietnam, with an efficacy rate of 95%, according to the government. "The vaccines are eligible for circulation and use nationwide," said the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture in a statement.
Furthermore, in another Southeast Asian country, the Philippines, progress is being made with the testing of the PPA vaccine.
