INS: Spectacular increase in Romania's food imports

In May 2023, FOB exports totaled 8,635.9 million euros, and CIF imports totaled 10,814.9 million euros, resulting in a deficit of 2,179.0 million euros.

Compared to May 2022, exports in May 2023 increased by 8.0%, and imports increased by 0.8%.

In the period 1.I-31.V 2023, FOB exports totaled 39679.8 million euros, and CIF imports totaled 50738.0 million euros.

In the period 1.I-31.V 2023, exports increased by 7.5%, and imports increased by 2.1%, compared to the period 1.I-31.V 2022.

The deficit of the trade balance (FOB/CIF) in the period 1.I-31.V 2023 was 11058.2 million euros, lower by 1715.9 million euros (-13.4%) than the one recorded in the period 1.I -31. V 2022.

In the period 1.I-31.V 2023, important weights in the structure of exports and imports are held by the product groups: machines and transport equipment (44.9% for export and 35.8% for import) and other manufactured products1) (30.3% for export and 28.8% for import).

The value of intra-EU27 exchanges of goods in the period 1.I-31.V 2023 was 28,912.8 million euros for shipments and 37,112.5 million euros for imports, representing 72.9% of total exports and 73.1% from total imports.

The value of extra-EU27 exchanges of goods in the period 1.I-31.V 2023 was 10,767.0 million euros for exports and 13,625.5 million euros for imports, representing 27.1% of total exports and 26.9% from total imports.

Unfortunately, compared to the same period last year, Romania's import of food products increased by over 20%.
