Kaufland conveys through a press release that it maintains its position among the largest companies in Romania based on turnover and continues to be one of the most significant private employers, according to the company's socio-economic impact study for the fiscal year 2022, conducted by KPMG.

The company recorded a growth in turnover up to 3.4 billion euros (March 2022 - February 2023), thanks to the efforts made to remain Romanians' preferred shopping destination.

Kaufland's Impact on the Romanian Economy

In the fiscal year 2022, Kaufland had a total contribution of 2.38 billion euros (Gross Value Added) to the local economy, representing approximately 1% of Romania's GDP.

New Jobs

Kaufland is one of the largest private employers in Romania, with over 16,500 employees. The salary grid and benefits package are constantly improved, and in 2022, the net minimum wage at Kaufland exceeded the national net minimum wage by nearly 60%.

The company generates around 91,000 full-time jobs in Romania through its activities, both directly and indirectly, equivalent to approximately 1.7% of the national workforce.

The impact study shows that each direct employee of Kaufland in Romania supports the employment of over 5 people in the entire Romanian economy by creating new jobs.

Investments in Romania

Last year, Kaufland invested 315 million euros in Romania in terms of CAPEX, specifically for the acquisition or modernization of fixed assets. It also made a contribution to the state budget of over 214 million euros through taxes and duties.

Out of every 1 euro spent at the checkout, 67 cents go to local suppliers.

Kaufland supports partnerships with local producers. In 2022, the company collaborated with over 2,600 suppliers from Romania.

Kaufland carries out support programs for these suppliers, and last year, over 80% of the total expenses with suppliers were allocated to local partners, surpassing the value of 2.4 billion euros.

Moreover, 67 cents out of every euro spent at Kaufland's checkouts go directly to businesses in Romania.

"We live in a society, not just an economy. To overcome moments of instability, to grow sustainably and responsibly, we need collaboration. Kaufland remains a trusted partner for local producers, for the community, for the country's economy. This annual evaluation exercise helps us measure the impact of the company's investments and direct them as efficiently as possible for Romania," said Marco Hößl, General Director of Kaufland Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

€9 million invested in community projects

Last year, Kaufland was involved in the development and implementation of social responsibility projects worth €9 million, including two funding programs through which Kaufland provides non-repayable grants to non-governmental organizations.

The company is among the major supporters of NGOs that fight for causes such as health, environmental protection, education, healthy living and sports, or culture.

The Most Sustainable Company in Romania for 5 Consecutive Years

With anti-plastic and anti-waste initiatives, pioneering packaging recycling infrastructures in stores, regenerative agriculture, and numerous projects for a cleaner environment, the company is one of the largest investors in sustainability.

Therefore, in 2022, for the fifth consecutive year, Kaufland Romania ranked first in the list of the most sustainable companies at the national level, a title awarded by CST Index.
