The latest European Commission Beef Market Observatory for Week 32 (3–9 August 2026) indicates that the EU beef market remains broadly stable despite significant differences between Member States. Average prices for the main beef categories changed only marginally compared with the previous week, suggesting that the market has entered a period of consolidation after the record highs seen earlier this year.

EU average remains stable

The benchmark price for adult male bovines (ACZ R3) reached €627.96/100 kg carcass weight, up just 0.3% from the previous week. Although prices remain historically high, they are below last year's exceptional levels, with the Commission's data showing a 7.7% year-on-year decline. The July average stood at €635.12/100 kg, confirming that the market has stabilised during the summer. Young bovines (8–12 months, Z R3) averaged €647.77/100 kg, down 5.0% year-on-year, while young bulls (A R3) reached €635.08/100 kg, representing a 6.9% annual decline. Bullocks (C R3) averaged €658.42/100 kg, down 10.8%, while cow prices continued to soften, with D O3 cows at €543.44/100 kg, 12.3% below last year's level. Premium cow carcasses (E R3) remained comparatively resilient at €669.54/100 kg, only 2.4% lower year-on-year.

Romania among the best-performing markets

Romania was one of the week's strongest performers. Prices for adult male bovines increased to €624.63/100 kg, while the country's U-category animals rose by 4.8% week-on-week. The combined Romanian male bovine average increased 3.1%, placing Romania among the best-performing beef markets in the EU during Week 32.

Poland also recorded a significant weekly increase of 3.7%, while Lithuania gained 3.8%. Sweden maintained the highest beef prices in the European Union, with R3 prices exceeding €840/100 kg. Conversely, Bulgaria (-5.2%), Portugal (-3.2%) and Ireland (-1.9%) experienced the sharpest weekly declines, highlighting continued regional market differences.

Live cattle prices show mixed developments

The report also highlights mixed movements in live cattle markets. The EU average price for dairy-type male calves was approximately €252/head, while beef-type calves averaged €408/head, both remaining well below last year's levels. Young store cattle averaged €4.58/kg, yearling males €5.80/kg, and yearling females €4.84/kg, reflecting weaker replacement animal values compared with 2025.

What it means for processors

For processors, the latest figures indicate that the European beef market remains balanced rather than volatile. Weekly price movements are generally limited, but substantial differences between Member States continue to create opportunities for sourcing strategies. Romania's strong price performance confirms firm domestic demand and tighter cattle availability, while weaker prices in several Western European markets may encourage cross-border purchasing.

Although prices have eased compared with last year's peaks, they remain well above long-term historical averages. According to the European Commission and market analysts, reduced cattle availability across Europe continues to support the market, limiting the likelihood of significant price declines in the short term.
