The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) has initiated discussions on expanding Romanian agri-food exports to the People’s Republic of China. The initiative was coordinated by ANSVSA President Alexandru Bociu, together with Vice-President Ioan Oleleu, during a meeting attended by representatives of professional associations and commercial partners interested in accessing the Chinese market.
The products analyzed for export include cereals – wheat, corn, sorghum, barley – oilseeds (sunflower, rapeseed, soybeans), dairy products, fishery products, and poultry meat. The discussions addressed both commercial potential and technical aspects related to sanitary-veterinary certification and procedures for accessing the Chinese market.
In the cereal sector, Romania holds a relevant position at European level. According to data published by Eurostat and the National Institute of Statistics, Romania consistently ranks among the main producers of corn and wheat in the European Union, while extra-EU exports represent a significant component of the agricultural trade balance. Strengthened access to the Chinese market could diversify current destinations and reduce dependence on certain traditional markets.
In the livestock and processed products sector, access to the Chinese market requires compliance with strict traceability, sanitary-veterinary control, and unit authorization requirements. ANSVSA manages these procedures in cooperation with the competent authorities of the People’s Republic of China, including with regard to the lists of units eligible for export.
Representatives of COFCO International, the international agricultural business platform of COFCO Corporation, as well as representatives of professional organizations from Romania, including ANAMOB and AFR, participated in the meeting.
The initiative aims to consolidate the technical and commercial framework necessary to increase Romanian agri-food exports to external markets with high potential. The progress of discussions and the completion of authorization procedures will determine the effective timeline for deliveries.
