The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has initiated a series of consultations with livestock associations in the context of recent difficulties generated by price volatility and pressures in the meat market. At the institution’s headquarters, representatives of pig farmers discussed with the authorities the measures needed to stabilize the sector, which has been affected in recent months by declining quotations and rising production costs.
In parallel, together with the National Authority for Consumer Protection and the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, an evaluation of the legislative framework governing the marketing of pork and products derived from frozen raw materials has been launched. The objective is to update the regulations so that labeling and retail presentation accurately reflect product characteristics, ensuring transparency for consumers and fair competition conditions for domestic producers.
The authorities have announced their intention to amend the legislation in order to clarify the differences between fresh meat and products obtained from frozen meat, in line with European regulations on consumer information. The measure aims to reduce commercial practices that may distort the market and to create a predictable framework for farmers and processors.
At the European level, during the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting, Romania requested that the European Commission activate exceptional support measures for the pig sector, in accordance with the mechanisms provided under the Common Agricultural Policy in situations of market disturbance. Such instruments may include temporary financial support or intervention measures to stabilize farmers’ incomes.
In the second part of the day, discussions also addressed the sheep and goat sector, considered strategic due to its share in livestock populations and its export role. Following the European Commission’s approval of financing for the purchase of breeding animals from European funds, a distinct allocation for this sector will be established within the National Strategic Plan. At the same time, the authorities announced improvements to genetic improvement conditions and facilitated access to credit.
The announced initiatives indicate a focus on strengthening the competitiveness of Romanian farmers through legislative adjustments, financial interventions, and the use of available European instruments. The effectiveness of these measures will depend on the speed of implementation and their alignment with developments in both the domestic and EU markets.
