Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna (UDMR) has been appointed interim Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, after Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced the list of interim ministers who will take over the portfolios left vacant following the resignations of ministers backed by PSD.
The Prime Minister stated that the interim ministers were asked to contact those who resigned in order to take over all ongoing issues, with the objective of ensuring that government operations are not affected — particularly the absorption of PNRR funds and the normal continuation of investments.
Tanczos Barna is not an unfamiliar figure to Romania’s agri-food sector. He previously held the position of State Secretary within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development between 2010 and 2012, and earlier served as president of the State Domains Agency between 2005 and 2007. In the Bolojan Government, Tanczos Barna currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister representing UDMR.
His appointment as interim minister comes at a sensitive moment for the agricultural sector, with the CAP subsidy calendar currently underway and growing European legislative pressure — from regulations regarding the labeling of plant-based products to the upcoming implementation of the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
