Romania’s meat industry is undergoing a rapid modernization process, in which digital technologies play a decisive role.

According to a 2024 report by the European Commission, units that have implemented digital systems for monitoring and controlling production flows recorded an average 15% reduction in technological losses and a 10% increase in efficiency.

In Romania, however, only 32% of processors use advanced technologies, according to a survey conducted by the Romanian Meat Association.

The main solutions implemented are IoT sensors for temperature monitoring, ERP systems for traceability, and data analytics platforms for production.

Initial costs can range between €80,000 and €250,000, but the investment pays off on average within 3–5 years, according to Eurostat studies.

The Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu, recently emphasized that “digitalization is no longer a luxury for processors, but a condition for competitiveness.”

For Romania, large-scale integration of these technologies could increase export capacity and reduce the gap with Western European countries.
