Tetra Pak is expanding its services to increase the efficiency of food and beverage producers in combating food loss, according to European Supermarket Magazine.
The packaging company aims to address the various ways in which losses occur in the food production process, from raw materials to water usage and waste disposal.
Tetra Pak referred to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which states that approximately 14% of the world's food, valued at $400 billion (€376 billion), is lost annually between harvest, production, and retail markets.
Food loss also means water loss. The World Resources Institute mentions that as a result of wasting 1.3 billion tonnes of food each year worldwide, about 45 trillion gallons of water are also wasted.
Tetra Pak's suite of waste reduction solutions includes consumables, factory components, and upgrades, such as water filtration solutions and consumables to reduce wastewater in various areas of a customer's factory.
Their asset management solutions for equipment incorporate customized results-based solutions, maintenance units, and remote assistance.
Tetra Pak added that these solutions increase equipment uptime, reduce response times for repairs, and extend the equipment's lifespan.
The company was recently recognized by Kepner Tregoe with an excellence award for implementing problem-solving methods in food packaging manufacturing.
"We are intensifying our efforts to address food losses, such as improving machine performance, minimizing breakdowns that could lead to production stoppages and subsequent food loss. For this, we will focus on renovating existing equipment, modernizing and reselling used machines to ensure that nothing is wasted," said Roberto Franchitti, Executive Vice President, Services at Tetra Pak.
"This ultimately contributes to responsible production and a circular economy," he added.
