The National Consumer Protection Authority (ANPC) informs that it has published a draft Order of the President of the ANPC for better consumer information on its own website, www.anpc.ro.
The draft regulatory act establishes the obligation of economic operators to inform consumers fully, correctly, and precisely regarding changes in product quantities while maintaining identical presentation, packaging, form (without limitation), even under the condition of maintaining the same price.
The information will be provided in the same visual field, in a visible, legible form, and with the same size, and will be carried out by economic operators using the following wordings:
"during the entire sales period of products with modified quantity" or "sale is valid within the available stock," through a poster/advertisement.
Additionally, economic operators must ensure the existence of a reference unit at the point of sale to which the quantity modification of the product applies.
"We have decided to make this Order transparent precisely to ensure consumers that the ANPC acts to protect their rights and interests, in the context of the phenomenon known as 'Shrinkflation,' which represents the reduction of product quantities and their sale at the same price.
Considering this situation, we recommend consumers to carefully read the labels, especially the product quantity, as well as the price per unit of the product, indicated on them, so that the final choice is an informed one" – Sebastian Hotca, interim president of the ANPC.
Proposals and observations can be sent from May 15, 2024, to May 25, 2024, to the email address: [email protected].
