“STOP Food Waste! Feeding Hope” – A Campaign Teaching Children to Fight Food Waste

In 2025, food waste continues to be a critical global issue. According to public sources, approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted worldwide.

In Romania, it is estimated that 2.5 million tons of food are discarded each year—equivalent to about 129 kg of food wasted per person annually.

In response to this pressing issue, Comtim Romania, together with the Regional Food Bank of Timișoara, has launched a social responsibility campaign titled "STOP Food Waste! Feeding Hope."

The initiative aims to educate children in both rural and urban schools in Timiș County on the responsible use of food resources and how to reduce food waste.

A Hands-On Approach to Teaching Responsibility

Through interactive workshops and the distribution of the educational brochure “Tim’s Journal”, the campaign encourages students to develop habits for smart and responsible food consumption:

  • Learning how to properly store food
  • Understanding how to read product labels
  • Finding creative ways to reuse leftovers—like turning roast scraps into new recipes

The most creative students will be rewarded—their recipes will be published on the campaign’s official website: www.jurnalulluitim.ro.

All participating students receive a copy of “Tim’s Journal”, an educational booklet designed specifically for children, written in an engaging and accessible style. The booklet offers fun facts and practical tips to help them become more responsible in managing food and reducing waste.

Meet Tim – The Young Hero of the Campaign

The protagonist of the journal is Tim (short for Comtim), a curious 9-year-old boy who has already attended a workshop on food waste reduction. Tim shares his experience and guides children through their journey toward sustainable consumption.

By taking part in the campaign and submitting their own recipe ideas, students not only contribute personally to reducing food waste but also discover the joy of creative cooking. The best entries will be featured on the website and may even receive special prizes.

The Voices Behind the Initiative

“We believe that change begins with education. Together with the Food Bank of Timișoara, we created this journal to promote better habits—don’t waste food, shop smart, recycle properly, and learn what you can do with leftovers,” says Cristina Bodea, Sustainability Director at Comtim Romania.

Early Education for Long-Term Impact

“The Food Bank of Timișoara got involved in this educational project for children based on the conviction that real change starts with the youngest generation. To build a future where food waste is no longer the norm, education must start early,” explains Hana Csaszar, President of the Regional Food Bank of Timișoara.

“This is how Tim’s Journal came to life—a specially designed activity book that takes children on an educational adventure, guided by Tim, a 9-year-old boy passionate about reducing food waste.”
