At the Initiative of ANSVSA President Dr. Alexandru Bociu, a Nationwide Food Safety Inspection Campaign Is Underway in Romania

A large-scale official inspection campaign is being conducted across Romania under the leadership of Dr. Alexandru Bociu, President of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA). The campaign focuses on food safety, hygiene, and traceability, with the aim of protecting public health and strengthening consumer confidence in the food products sold nationwide.

Preventing Foodborne Illnesses and Fraud

This nationwide initiative aims to prevent foodborne illnesses, food fraud, and product substitution that could endanger consumer health. It also seeks to boost public trust in the safety of food products marketed in Romania.

To ensure the rigor and effectiveness of inspections, a temporary working group has been established, coordinated by the ANSVSA President. This group includes the executive directors of the Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorates from the counties of Olt, Dâmbovița, Teleorman, Ialomița, and the municipality of Bucharest, along with specialist inspectors from these institutions.

Campaign Objectives

The control teams will inspect facilities registered and authorized for sanitary-veterinary and food safety purposes, focusing on compliance with key requirements such as:

  • Proper legal registration and operation of retail establishments;
  • Adherence to strict hygiene standards for food products and processing, storage, and sales areas;
  • Proper transport and handling of food, including cold chain maintenance;
  • Protection against contamination and pest control in food handling areas;
  • Product traceability, including origin verification to prevent substitution or falsification;
  • Correct implementation of HACCP procedures and self-monitoring programs;
  • Sample collection to detect food fraud and non-compliant product substitutions.

Firm Measures to Protect Consumers

When non-compliances or irregularities are identified, control teams are empowered to enforce strict corrective actions, including:

  • Issuing administrative fines and penalties;
  • Temporarily suspending the activities of non-compliant establishments;
  • Prohibiting operations that do not meet legal requirements;
  • Official detention of products that present risks to consumers.

A Clear Message from ANSVSA

“Protecting public health and consumer interests is a top priority for ANSVSA. Through this comprehensive inspection campaign, we are sending a clear message to all food business operators: compliance with food safety legislation and standards is not optional—it is a duty owed to every citizen,” — Dr. Alexandru Bociu, President of ANSVSA

This initiative is part of ANSVSA’s ongoing efforts to maintain high food safety standards and ensure continued public confidence in food products marketed in Romania.
