According to European Supermarket Magazine, Danone Spain has proposed a five-step strategy to meet the future needs of the yogurt category by advancing the transformation of its entire value chain from source.

All sustainable

The plan includes:

sourcing from farms with lower CO2 emissions;

introducing new packaging models that are 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable;

transitioning to renewable energy for the entire production chain;

implementing waste management measures along the value chain; and

investing in high-quality yogurts with essential nutrients.

The food giant has also stated that it has already reduced its CO2 emissions from its farms by 20% in the last five years and aims to reduce them by up to 37% by 2030.

Silvia Canals, Head of Sustainability at Danone Iberia, said: "The future of yogurt is healthy and sustainable, as less means more – less impact on the environment, more nutrition.

Strategic transformation

"For Danone, it is essential to take care of families and offer the best products for people and the planet, starting from the field, at our family farms. Because the better our cows are, the more nourishing our yogurt will be. It is a process that goes through our entire value chain until it reaches homes."

Over the past decade, Danone has implemented a strategic transformation of its agricultural and livestock model, helping it become one of the first food companies with greenhouse gas reduction plans – including agricultural emissions – approved by SBTi.

It is also the first and only food company with a methane reduction commitment aligned with the global COP26 methane commitment.

François Lacombe, CEO of Danone Iberia, said: "Danone is an innovative and collaborative leader in the dairy sector. We have shown how we respond to our consumers' demands for a more sustainable agri-food industry, continuing to lead the way for a healthier and more sustainable transition."
