With a continuous focus on innovation, the investment will help the company differentiate its offering in the market, supporting customers in achieving their environmental goals.
DS Smith aims to lead in sustainable packaging solutions in the Eastern European region while creating value for its customers and partners.

Reinier Schlatmann, Regional CEO of DS Smith Packaging East Europe, said, "With 56% of consumers actively looking for reduced plastic use, we will be better able to support our customers with their sustainability objectives and continue to decarbonize our operations, accelerating circular and sustainable packaging solutions."
The investment includes the installation of state-of-the-art machinery that will increase production capacity by over 20% and advanced technological capabilities, such as HD Flexo printing in 7 colors and precision cutting.
Other additions include a steam optimization feature on the cardboard production machine, expected to reduce the site's gas consumption by 12% and cut carbon emissions by 210 tons of CO2 per year.
"Significant Investment"
Christian Schmidt, CEO of DS Smith Packaging Romania, said, "We are excited about the significant investment that enhances our machine capabilities and production capacity."
"This empowers our team to deliver innovative packaging designs, improve quality, and provide state-of-the-art graphics."
Furthermore, the installation of a new LED lighting system - part of a group-wide rollout - will contribute to its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 46% by 2030.
DS Smith has already introduced advanced waste management technologies that reduce on-site electricity consumption by around 10%. The company hopes to complete the Ghimbav project by the end of 2023.
