Meat exports represent a strategic pillar for Romania’s food industry, given that domestic consumption remains relatively stable. In 2024, Romania exported meat and meat products worth over €650 million, according to INS data, with Germany, Italy, and Greece as the main destinations.
However, in 2025, processors are increasingly turning their attention to emerging markets such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. Demand in these regions is driven by population growth and lifestyle changes, which are creating a growing need for animal protein.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), meat consumption in North Africa is expected to increase by 15% by 2030, and in Southeast Asia by 18%. In this context, Romania holds a competitive advantage thanks to the recognized quality of its products and lower production costs.
The main barriers, however, remain strict sanitary-veterinary standards and the absence of bilateral export agreements. Through the CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027, processors can access funding for slaughterhouse modernization and international certifications, which will facilitate their entry into emerging markets.
For the Romanian industry, diversifying export destinations represents an opportunity to reduce dependence on the European market and to strengthen its position on the global stage.
