Retail Trade Volume Down in February 2025 Compared to January, but Higher Year-over-Year

In February 2025, the retail trade turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased compared to January 2025 by 2.1% in gross series and by 1.0% in seasonally and calendar adjusted series.

Compared to February 2024, the retail trade turnover volume increased in February 2025 by 1.1% in gross terms and by 3.3% when adjusted for working days and seasonality.

January–February 2025 vs. January–February 2024

During the period 1 January – 28 February 2025, the retail trade turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) rose by 2.8% in gross series and by 3.7% in the adjusted series compared to the same period of 2024 (1 January – 29 February).

February 2025 Compared to January 2025

In gross terms, retail turnover volume decreased by 2.1% overall, driven by declines in:

  • Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco (-2.7%);
  • Sales of non-food products (-2.2%);
  • Retail sales of automotive fuel in specialized stores (-0.6%).

In the seasonally and calendar adjusted series, the retail turnover volume fell by 1.0% compared to the previous month due to:

  • A 1.9% drop in sales of food, beverages, and tobacco;
  • A 0.6% decrease in fuel sales;
  • A slight 0.1% decline in non-food product sales.

February 2025 Compared to February 2024

In gross terms, the retail trade turnover volume increased by 1.1% overall, supported by:

  • A 4.3% rise in sales of non-food products;
  • A 3.3% increase in automotive fuel sales.

Meanwhile, sales of food, beverages, and tobacco declined by 4.0%.

In the seasonally and calendar adjusted series, turnover volume rose by 3.3% year-over-year, largely due to:

  • A 5.9% increase in non-food product sales;
  • Higher fuel sales in specialized stores.
