The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) announces that the Emergency Ordinance no. 67/2023 regarding the establishment of a temporary measure to combat excessive price increases for certain agricultural and food products has already produced immediate effects, as prices for the 14 basic food products have decreased by up to 50%.
The analysis of prices in supermarkets highlights that substantial price reductions are observed for products such as bread, oil, and potatoes, followed by telemea cheese, cornmeal, white flour, and sugar.
The normative act aims to limit, for a period of three months, the commercial mark-ups practiced in the processing and marketing of some essential food products, with the purpose of reducing prices for these product categories and, consequently, increasing the purchasing power of the population.
"I am glad to see that the measures taken through this normative act have a positive impact on the Romanian economy and that, together with representatives of supermarkets, producers, and processors, we have managed to find a viable solution that led to stopping the price increases for basic foods and increasing the purchasing power for Romanians with low and medium incomes.
I thank everyone involved in this process! I also thank the media representatives for their support in understanding and promoting this initiative," explained Florin Barbu, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.
