On November 22, 2023, around 21:30, the Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate Vaslui (DSVSA) self-notified regarding a suspicion of foodborne illness at Murgeni Psychiatric Hospital, following the consumption of food products received from Florești Monastery.

After obtaining preliminary information, two teams of DSVSA Vaslui inspectors arrived at the two locations to conduct an epidemiological investigation, identify the incriminated foods, and collect samples.

Inside the space dedicated to food preparation for the monastery residents, various types of fish were found, totaling over 114 kg. The entire quantity of fish was placed under veterinary sanitary restrictions at freezing temperature pending the completion of the investigation.

Considering that the religious establishment does not have veterinary sanitary registration for public feeding activities and lacks authorization for the transport of food products, a fine of 40,000 lei was imposed.

Inspections by DSVSA Vaslui at the psychiatric hospital's cafeteria indicated that the unit is registered for veterinary sanitary standards, has appropriate flows, and is in good maintenance and hygiene condition. DSVSA Vaslui inspectors collected food samples from the hospital cafeteria's food block, which were sent on the night of November 22-23 to the Institute of Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health in Bucharest for microbiological, physico-chemical, and toxicological analyses to guide the course of investigations. Products from various fish assortments in the hospital's food block were identified and seized until the results of the analyses were obtained.

For violating norms related to ensuring traceability of food products served to patients, as they were received as a donation from an entity not registered for veterinary sanitation, the hospital unit was fined 12,000 lei.

On the morning of November 23, 2023, investigations expanded to the warehouses that supplied the incriminated food lots, where samples were collected for laboratory examinations. DSVSA Vaslui inspectors collaborate in this investigation with representatives of the Public Health Directorate and the Vaslui Police Inspectorate. Communication and Documentary Logistics Service
