According to MADR (the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), Minister Florin Barbu held working meetings with representatives of food processors and retailers to discuss, with all involved parties, the ways to extend the cap on the commercial margin for basic food products, as well as to expand the list of products for which a limited commercial margin will be applied across the processing-distribution-marketing chain.
"We still desire the extension of this measure, which has had the expected effects, namely the prevention of food price increases. We have agreed with food processors and retailers to extend the measure for a period of three months, until the end of January 2024, taking into account the winter holidays.
At the same time, in agreement with food processors and retailers, we will also expand the list of products that will benefit from a limited commercial margin.
These are foods that Romanians use in preparing holiday meals and more, such as rice, bouillon, margarine, sour cream, yeast, cozonac (a type of sweet bread), pickled cabbage, or garlic," stated the Minister of Agriculture.
The proposals made by Minister Barbu were agreed upon by processors and retailers and will be subject to a draft legislative act, which will follow the legislative process, including transparency, approval, and adoption.
