The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) carried out nationwide thematic inspections in supermarkets and hypermarkets between February 2–6, 2026, as part of the official food safety surveillance program. The checks targeted food safety-registered units and covered both products of animal and non-animal origin, with a focus on compliance with hygiene, traceability, labeling, and storage requirements.
According to data released by the institution, 1,605 commercial units were inspected. Following the checks, inspectors applied 517 administrative sanctions, totaling 5,521,500 lei, as well as 147 warnings. Additionally, 3 Activity Suspension Orders and 2 Activity Prohibition Orders were issued. The authority also ordered the official seizure of 980.52 kg of food products, directed for disposal, with an estimated value of 11,185 lei.
The main non-compliances identified included incomplete disinfection, disinsection, and deratization actions, the sale of products with damaged packaging, overcrowded storage spaces, the absence of self-monitoring programs, inadequate sanitation of premises and equipment, disruption of the cold chain, and improper handling of products at assisted display counters. Situations were also found involving the lack of identification elements for products of animal origin and the use of premises not approved by sanitary-veterinary authorities.
During the inspections, samples were collected for laboratory analyses: 66 microbiological samples, 58 for residue determination, and 67 for other parameters, including heavy metals and genetically modified organisms. According to the institution, the analysis results were compliant.
ANSVSA representatives stated that the actions are carried out under the established program and will continue in stages across other areas of the food industry. The stated objective is to maintain a high level of food safety and ensure compliance with applicable regulations in the modern retail network.
