ANSVSA Issues Warning on Foot-and-Mouth Disease Risk in Romania

Following recent outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the region—including four outbreaks in Slovakia and one confirmed case on March 26, 2025, at a cattle farm in Hungary—the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) is raising an alarm about the high risk of virus transmission to Romania.

Heightened Epidemiological Risk & Preventive Measures

With border controls lifted due to Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, the epidemiological risk has significantly increased. In response, ANSVSA, in collaboration with all relevant institutions, is implementing strict measures to safeguard the livestock sector.

Based on the March 11, 2025, decision of the National Committee for Disease Control (CNCB), nationwide prevention and control measures have been enforced.

Duration of Measures

The restrictions and protocols will remain in effect until lifted by the competent authorities following an epidemiological assessment.

Call for Responsibility & Cooperation

ANSVSA urges all economic operators and institutions to treat the imposed measures with utmost seriousness and actively collaborate to prevent the spread of FMD.

“Strict compliance with the measures and active cooperation between all institutions and stakeholders are essential to protect Romania’s livestock. Preventing the introduction and spread of foot-and-mouth disease requires a collective effort. This is a shared responsibility.”President of ANSVSA

Immediate Reporting is Critical

To protect livestock and prevent further spread, any suspicion of foot-and-mouth disease must be reported immediately to the local County Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA). Every prompt action makes a difference!
