On February 18, 2026, “Batog de sturion” was officially registered in the European Union Register of Geographical Indications, obtaining Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2026/358 published in the Official Journal of the European Union. The product thus becomes the 16th Romanian product recognized at European level under quality schemes.

The geographical area defined for the PGI includes Tulcea County, encompassing the Danube Delta and the mouths of the Danube. The product specification establishes the use of dorsal fillet obtained from farmed sturgeon – beluga (Huso huso), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii), and Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) – in compliance with regulations on the protection of wild species and fishing bans in natural habitats. The use of aquaculture raw material contributes to resource conservation and production traceability.

The technological process involves salting with a mixture of rock salt and sugar, drying under controlled conditions, and smoking with hardwood. The technical specifications aim to achieve a firm yet elastic texture and a balanced, slightly sweet and smoky taste. The final product is presented as an elongated piece obtained from the dorsal fillet, with a compact fiber structure and a color specific to the smoking process.

The product’s reputation is historically documented; early 20th-century works, including those signed by Grigore Antipa, mention sturgeon-based preparations from the Danube and Dobrogea areas, supporting the link between the product and its geographical origin.

Through this registration, Romania strengthens its portfolio of products protected at European level, alongside other established PGI and PDO products. According to public data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, other Romanian products are at various stages of evaluation at the European Commission.

The registration of “Batog de sturion” PGI creates premises for enhanced valorization of local production in Tulcea; increased visibility on domestic and external markets; and the controlled development of sturgeon aquaculture in Romania. Full details regarding the technical specifications are available on the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
