Demand for organic poultry meat continues to grow across the European market, driven by consumer interest in natural and sustainable products. According to Eurostat (2024), organic meat production increased by 12% compared to 2023, with its share in total poultry production reaching 4.7% across the European Union.

In Romania, the organic products market is still in a development phase, but with significant potential. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture (MADR) indicate that the areas dedicated to organic poultry farming have doubled over the past five years, and the number of certified organic farms exceeded 300 in 2024.

However, production costs for organic poultry are 30–40% higher than in conventional systems, due to natural feed, slower growth rates, and restrictions on veterinary treatments. These costs are directly reflected in the final price, which is often 50–60% higher, limiting access for part of the consumer base.

Another challenge is the lack of slaughtering and processing facilities dedicated to organic products. In Romania, only three slaughterhouses are certified for organic poultry meat, according to ANSVSA. This limits the expansion of distribution networks and affects the competitiveness of local farmers.

At the European level, the European Commission promotes the expansion of organic production through the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy, which aim for 25% of all agricultural land to be organically certified by 2030. For Romania, achieving this target depends on integrating AFIR and PNDR 2023–2027 funding and strengthening producer associations.

In the long term, the growth of the organic poultry segment could position Romania as a regional supplier of premium products. Success, however, depends on clear communication with consumers and guaranteed traceability — the cornerstone of credibility in modern organic agriculture.
