The Government of Romania Strengthens Dialogue with Pig Farmers to Combat African Swine Fever and Support Domestic Production

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan held a meeting today at Victoria Palace with representatives of the Romanian Pork Producers Association, regarding the necessary measures to combat African swine fever and support the pig farming sector.

The association’s representatives highlighted the challenges faced by farmers, particularly the losses caused by the spread of African swine fever, despite investments in biosecurity. Measures discussed to limit the spread of the virus and its effects included: • Clear and up-to-date animal records in households and farms, in line with current legislation;

      • Monitoring and managing the wild boar population in forested areas;

      • Combating unauthorized and untaxed trade in pork;

      • Accelerating and ensuring compensation payments in areas affected by outbreaks.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan emphasized the need for stronger state action and greater accountability of the institutions involved, in order to ensure compliance with legislation and identify the most effective solutions against the spread of African swine fever.

The Government of Romania supports the development of the pig farming sector under safe sanitary conditions and for farmers, with the aim of maintaining a balance between domestic production and imports, thereby helping to reduce the trade balance deficit.

The meeting at Victoria Palace was also attended by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Florin Barbu and ANSVSA President Alexandru Bociu.

The Government reaffirms its commitment to working in partnership with farmers and professional organizations to strengthen Romania’s food security and protect one of the most important sectors of national agriculture – pig farming.
