The National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) imposed fines totaling approximately RON 6.7 million following inspections carried out over a single week at more than 1,900 economic operators across Romania. The actions primarily targeted compliance with storage and commercialization conditions for food products, with a focus on food safety and the conformity of refrigeration spaces.
The reported data indicate a high frequency of non-compliance. Among the most relevant violations identified were the sale of eggs with cracks or dirt on the shell, as well as improper storage of products in refrigerated spaces. Inspectors found deposits of impurities, ice buildup, and condensation inside refrigerators—elements that point to deficiencies in sanitation and maintenance.
These issues have direct implications for food safety. According to European food hygiene standards (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004), operators are required to maintain equipment and facilities in conditions that prevent product contamination. The presence of cracks in eggs or impurities in storage areas increases the risk of microbiological development, particularly in the case of perishable goods.
Following the inspections, ANPC imposed both administrative fines and complementary measures, including the temporary suspension of the sale of certain products and the withdrawal of non-compliant items from the market. In some cases, business activity was suspended until the identified deficiencies were remedied.
The action reflects an intensification of controls in the food sector, in a context where pressure on operators is increasing, both in terms of costs and compliance requirements. For the food industry, the inspection results highlight the need to strengthen internal procedures related to hygiene, monitoring, and traceability.
For economic operators, maintaining standards is no longer just a compliance requirement, but an essential condition for business continuity and consumer trust. For authorities, such actions remain key tools for the rapid correction of market dysfunctions and alignment with European food safety requirements.
