Urban consumption in the EU is increasingly shifting toward standardised, easy-to-use products with clear information on composition. Eurostat data show that ready-to-cook products and standardised portions grew by +6% in 2024 in European retail. This segment is driven by young consumers and households that prefer small portions (250–500 g).
In Romania, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) confirms an increase in tray-packed products with uniform cuts, especially for poultry and pork. The pace is moderate, at +3–4% annually, but consistent. Standardisation reduces perceived risk, increases flavour consistency and simplifies the cooking process—key advantages for active urban consumers.
According to the 2024 Eurobarometer surveys, more than 58% of European consumers compare portions based on weight, fat content and packaging format. Traceability and label clarity have become decisive criteria in the ready-to-cook segment.
For processors, portfolios with standardised cuts represent differentiation opportunities. These products have minimal losses, high turnover and stronger negotiation potential with retailers, especially in large urban markets.
