Romanian MEP Dan Motreanu, responsible on behalf of the EPP Group for the opinion of the Committee on Regional Development (REGI) regarding the future of the Common Agricultural Policy, announced that his amendments in support of Romanian farmers have received backing from EPP representatives.
Among the proposals put forward by Motreanu is a 10% increase in budget allocations, which would mean for Romania a rise from €20 billion to €22 billion under the CAP 2028–2034. The MEP also proposes that at least 30% of the funds allocated for rural development be used through integrated development instruments, involving municipalities, farmers, and local entrepreneurs in investment decisions.
Another measure aims to allocate at least 5% of the CAP budget to young farmers, in a context where only 10.4% of farmers in Romania are under the age of 40, compared to 12% at the European level.
At European level, the European Commission has proposed a total budget of €300 billion for the CAP 2028–2034. The EPP is set to begin negotiations with the other political groups, with the objective of adopting the budget by the end of 2026.
