Demand for beef is increasing on external markets, particularly in the Middle East, where Romania exports over 60,000 head of cattle annually, according to MADR 2024. Specialized breeds such as Angus, Charolais, and Limousin are the most sought after, due to the superior quality of the meat.
Romanian beef cattle farms have expanded mainly in Transylvania and the western regions of the country, where natural pastures provide favorable conditions. The economic return is attractive: an Angus calf can be sold for export at €1,200–1,500, while vertically integrated farms achieve higher profit margins by controlling the entire production chain.
The average price of beef carcasses stood at 28 lei/kg in 2024, while on premium markets it can exceed 35 lei/kg. Exports to countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar have increased by 15% over the past two years, stimulating investment in breeding and international certifications.
For 2025, the sector is expected to consolidate, with a stronger focus on quality, traceability, and animal welfare. Financial support under the CAP Strategic Plan and partnerships with modern slaughterhouses are essential for Romanian farms to maintain their competitiveness on the global market.
