The food industry is often perceived as a natural extension of agriculture. In reality, the economic scale of the sector transforms it into a major industrial pillar of the European economy. Food production, processing, and distribution together form the largest industrial sector in the European Union.

The turnover of the European food industry exceeds €1.2 trillion annually, and the sector includes approximately 290,000 companies and more than 4.5 million employees. By its size, the food industry surpasses many traditional industrial sectors, including in terms of the number of active enterprises.

The structure of the sector is characterized by a very large number of small and medium-sized enterprises, which represent more than 99% of all companies. At the same time, production volumes are concentrated around large industrial operators capable of managing complex logistics chains and exports on a continental scale.

From an economic perspective, food processing is the stage that generates the largest share of added value within the agri-food chain. Agricultural raw materials—such as cereals, milk, meat, or vegetables—gain significant economic value only after being transformed into finished products intended for consumption.

For the European Union, the food industry also has a strategic dimension. The sector ensures the stability of food supply for over 450 million consumers and supports agri-food exports worth hundreds of billions of euros annually.

In 2026, the competitiveness of the sector increasingly depends on investments in technology, digitalization, and the efficiency of logistics chains. In a global market characterized by volatility and cost pressures, the ability of the food industry to integrate agriculture, processing, and distribution remains a central element of European food security.
