Kaufland Romania has inaugurated the first store in Bucharest with an urban mini-forest planted on an area of 1500 m2 in the parking lot of the new hypermarket. The initiative is a retail first in Romania and marks the beginning of a new project in which Kaufland aims to contribute to reducing pollution in urban areas.

With the opening of the store on Popa Nan Street no. 82, sector 2, Kaufland Romania expands its network to 23 units in Bucharest and 173 nationwide.

Built on a total area of over 6,000 m2, the hypermarket has a sales area of approximately 3,300 m2 and offers customers access to numerous ecological facilities and automated packaging return options, with or without the "Packaging with Guarantee" symbol.

Kaufland Popa Nan opens its doors to shoppers on Thursday, December 14, and will subsequently operate daily from 07:00-22:00 from Monday to Saturday, and 08:00-20:00 on Sundays.

To celebrate the opening, customers were welcomed with special promotions on food and items from toy ranges, home appliances, and tools for home and car use, within available stock limits. Products included in the offer are: boneless pork pulp – 19.99 lei/kg, reduced from 24.99 lei, bowl mixer – 99.99 lei, reduced from 229.99 lei, Parkside metal box with tools – 219.99 lei, reduced from 399.99 lei.

Outside the store, on an area of 189 m2, customers are greeted by Kaufland's first Community Wall, created in partnership with Artown Festival by the Bucharest artist KSELE. On the launch day, after 2 PM, store customers and residents of the Popa Nan neighborhood are invited to participate in completing the community wall by coloring the second "c" in the message: "Involvement makes a difference."

Distinguishing itself from other stores in the country, the new Kaufland features saplings planted on an area of 1500 m2 in the parking lot, which will grow over time, forming an urban forest in the heart of Bucharest. With the support of Kaufland employees, as part of the "Planting Good Deeds in Romania" initiative, approximately 2000 saplings from various species were planted in the first stage: a mix of red oak, pedunculate oak, foggy oak, ash, mulberry, elm, cherry, elderberry, and others. These will be periodically supplemented and cared for in the coming years.

The action at Kaufland Popa Nan is the first in a series of six planned urban mini-forest plantings by the end of 2024. The concept was tested in a pilot stage in March 2023 at the Kaufland Crevedia store in Dambovita County, where the first urban mini-forest was planted with 1,000 saplings on an area of 1,200 m2. Similar forests will be planted at Kaufland Emil Racovita in Bucharest, Kaufland Comarnic, and Kaufland Zalau.

The hypermarket provides access to a variety of products, featuring an assisted showcase for fresh products with a length of 24 meters, a fresh fish section, an extended fruits and vegetables section, bakery, frozen products, dairy products, basic groceries, sweets, household products, beverages, and non-food items. At the outdoor Grill point, customers can choose from a diverse menu of hot dishes.

For quick payment of purchases, the store is equipped with 20 cash registers, including 10 self-checkout express registers and 10 standard registers. Moreover, customers can use the K-Scan service to scan products as they add them to their cart, completing the payment at the checkout.

In the shopping gallery, customers will find numerous stores and services, including the Gustul Pasiunii pastry shop or the prepared food from the Cu Gust restaurant, Dr. Max pharmacy, InMedio store, and Dr. Skin beauty center.

The parking lot has a total capacity of approximately 240 spaces, including 9 for people with disabilities and 7 for parents. Additionally, customers have access to 5 parking spaces with charging stations for electric cars and bike racks.

To encourage ecological behavior among customers, the new Kaufland store in Bucharest also integrates separate collection systems, such as:

  • In the store parking lot, customers will find a double recycling machine, self-service type, where they can recycle packaging in exchange for extra discount vouchers. They can bring plastic, glass, and metal packaging (up to 3 liters), and the 0.50 RON deposit will be refunded only for packaging with the "Packaging with Guarantee" symbol printed on the label.
  • At the entrance area, in the specially designed space resembling a turtle, customers can deposit packaging from personal care or cleaning products for recycling and will be instantly rewarded with 35% discount vouchers for purchasing other new products from the monthly offer. Customers can deposit empty plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body or face cream, mouthwash, or liquid soap, as well as empty containers of cleaning products, such as laundry or dishwashing detergents, kitchen, bathroom, floor, or window cleaning solutions. Vouchers can be collected from the Information Desk in the store.
