Kaufland Strengthens Its Position as a Key Economic and Social Contributor in Romania

Kaufland maintains its position among the top companies in Romania by turnover and remains one of the largest private employers, according to the company’s 2024 socio-economic impact report, conducted with support from KPMG.

In the financial year March 2024 – February 2025, Kaufland recorded a turnover of €3.97 billion, driven by its consistent focus on freshness, variety, and affordable prices.

A Major Contributor to the Romanian Economy

In the 2024 financial year, Kaufland contributed approximately €2.8 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the Romanian economy—equivalent to about 0.8% of the national GDP.

Employment Impact

Kaufland is one of Romania’s largest private employers, with over 18,000 employees across 192 stores, two logistics centers, and two administrative headquarters. The company aims to expand to 250 hypermarkets across Romania and the Republic of Moldova by 2030.

Through its direct, indirect, and induced activities, Kaufland supports the creation of over 126,000 full-time jobs, representing 2.4% of the national workforce.

The study reveals that each Kaufland employee helps sustain 7.6 full-time jobs in the broader Romanian economy.

Investment and Fiscal Contribution

In 2024, Kaufland invested €157 million in CAPEX—focused on acquiring or upgrading fixed assets—and contributed €321 million in taxes to the national budget.

65 Cents per Euro Spent Stay in Romania

Kaufland supports the development of local businesses by collaborating with approximately 2,500 Romanian suppliers. In 2024, 81% of total supplier expenditures were allocated to local partners—exceeding €2.93 billion.

Thus, for every €1 spent at the checkout, 65 cents go directly to Romanian businesses.

Furthermore, for each €1 of direct GVA generated by Kaufland Romania, an additional €3.37 is generated in the local economy through indirect and induced effects.

A Responsible Growth Model

“In times where challenges are everywhere, people look for more than good prices—they look for anchors. Responsible companies strive not only to meet business goals but to be a true support for society.

For 20 years, Kaufland has grown alongside Romania through sustainable investments in people, local partnerships, and communities.

This annual study confirms that our actions have a measurable impact—economically and socially—on Romanians' daily lives. These results motivate us to keep moving forward with the same energy, responsibility, and commitment to Romania’s future.” — Marco Hößl, CEO, Kaufland Romania & Republic of Moldova

€9.5 Million Invested in Community Projects

In 2024, Kaufland invested €9.5 million in community-driven social responsibility initiatives, including grant programs like "În Stare de Bine" and "Start ONG", offering funding to non-governmental organizations.

Kaufland remains one of the leading supporters of NGOs in Romania, actively involved in education, environment, culture, social care, sports, and healthy lifestyle promotion.

Transformational Fiscal Impact

The fiscal contributions made by Kaufland in 2024 could be translated into tangible benefits such as:

  • Over 10 million medical consultations (at €32 per consultation covered by CNAS),
  • Construction of hospitals with around 2,000 beds,
  • Annual disability allowances for 300,000 individuals (€1,100/person),
  • Or funding the education of 150,000 students (€2,100 annual average cost per student, including staff salaries and other expenses).

Seven Years as the Top Sustainable Retail Company in Romania

Kaufland Romania ranked #1 for the seventh consecutive year in the Romania Corporate Sustainability & Transparency (CST) Index, as the most transparent and high-performing company in retail when it comes to sustainability.

The company’s sustainability approach spans the entire value chain, including:

  • Initiatives to reduce plastic use and food waste,
  • Two packaging collection infrastructures in all stores,
  • 100 commercial locations equipped with photovoltaic systems,
  • Support for sustainable agriculture, and
  • Long-term environmental protection programs.
