Organic milk represents a niche segment in Romania, but with significant growth potential in the coming years.
According to Eurostat, the organic market in the EU accounts for 8% of total dairy consumption, while in Romania it barely exceeds 2%. In 2024, Romanian consumers spent approximately €35 million on organic dairy products, an increase of 15% compared to the previous year.
The main factors driving demand are concerns for health and the availability of organic products in major retail chains.
However, the challenges are considerable: certification costs for farmers, the lack of separate collection infrastructure, and higher prices, 25–30% above conventional products.
The Ministry of Agriculture supports organic production through the CAP Strategic Plan (PNS) and dedicated subsidies, but large-scale implementation remains slow.
A 2024 FAO report highlights that demand for organic dairy in Europe will grow by 10% annually, which could turn Romania into a competitive supplier if the network of organic farmers expands.
For consumers, organic milk is no longer just a premium product but a lifestyle choice.
The outlook is positive, but it depends on coherent public policies and better communication of the benefits to the public.
