The rise in lactose intolerance and growing consumer interest in more easily digestible alternatives have prompted Romanian dairy processors to introduce lactose-free product lines into their portfolios. Lactose-free dairy products — including milk, yogurts, and cheeses — have become an important niche in the local market.

According to estimates by the Romanian Dairy Producers Association, sales of lactose-free products increased by approximately 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year, driven by growing demand among young and urban consumers.

The production of these products involves the use of lactase enzymes during the technological process, which requires heightened attention to processing parameters. Additionally, cross-contamination must be avoided, which calls for dedicated production lines or rigorous CIP (Clean-in-Place) cleaning procedures.

Although production costs are 8–12% higher than those of conventional products, margins are often greater, and the products are perceived as premium. Retailers support the expansion of these ranges through visible shelf placement and consumer education campaigns.

The lactose-free dairy segment is still emerging in Romania, but experiences from Western European markets indicate that this category could reach 10–15% of total dairy sales in the coming years.
