The 2024 FAO report on global meat consumption shows that demand continues to rise, particularly in Asia and Africa, while in Europe and North America the trend is stabilizing or even declining. According to FAO, global per capita meat consumption reached 34.7 kg, though significant differences exist between regions.
Eurostat indicates that in the European Union, meat consumption has dropped by 2% over the past two years, reflecting concerns related to health and sustainability. In Romania, INS reported an average consumption of 65 kg per capita in 2024, with a strong preference for poultry meat. “Global trends directly affect the Romanian market, especially in the context of exports and sustainability regulations,” stated an MADR analyst. WHO recommends reducing the intake of processed red meat, and these guidelines are already being reflected in European policies.
For Romania, the challenge lies in adapting production to external market demand and promoting value-added products. FAO notes that countries which have invested in production diversification and clean labeling have gained market share. Thus, Romania has the opportunity to reposition its meat industry by capitalizing on global trends, while also strengthening domestic consumption through high-quality local products.
