The Minister of Finance, Tánczos Barna, delivered a message of reassurance to the agricultural sector, stating that the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur will not generate immediate negative effects for farmers. The statement comes amid concerns raised by agricultural organizations regarding a potential increase in imports from South America. According to the cited source, the minister explicitly emphasized that, in its current form, there are no grounds for rapid bankruptcies triggered by this agreement.

The official’s position is based on the structure of the agreement negotiated at the level of the European Commission, which includes protection mechanisms for sensitive products. These consist of limited tariff quotas and phased implementation—elements that, according to the Commission’s public data, are designed to mitigate the immediate impact on the internal market. In addition, the agreement contains safeguard clauses that can be activated in the event of significant disruptions in the agri-food market.

In his statement, Tánczos Barna indicated that the real pressure on farmers is not cyclical, but structural. Differences in production costs between the European Union and Mercosur countries remain significant; however, these will not automatically translate into a short-term economic shock. Instead, the impact will be gradual, and the ability of farmers and processors to adapt will become a key factor.

The message conveyed is institutionally clear: the agreement does not create immediate systemic risks, but it introduces a more demanding competitive environment. Under these conditions, maintaining competitiveness will depend on operational efficiency, integration within the value chain, and the effective use of support instruments available at both European and national levels.
